In an open letter, hundreds of top doctors and scientists have signed a letter of support for Anthony Fauci MD for his many years of service to the public and his leadership in the fight against the pandemic.
“We are deeply disappointed by the personal attacks against Dr. Fauci. The criticism is erroneous and unscientific. It is also unfounded in the facts , and often, motivated by partisan politics” is the text of the letter of support which was written by Ezekiel Emanuel, MD, and signed by more than 300 scientists, public health experts and medical professionals including Nobel Laureates an ex- Republican senator, and the leadership of medical societies and institutions.
Fauci, who has been with the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984, serves as President Biden’s top medical advisor in relation to the pandemic.
“Dr. Anthony Fauci served the USA with wisdom, integrity, and a great deal of compassion for more than 40 years. Through HIV, Ebola and now COVID, he has unswervingly served the United States guiding the country to extremely successful results. The letter says that he has our complete respect and trust as a scientist, and as a leader within the United States.”
Fauci has been subject to harsh criticism by congressional Republicans especially Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Roger Marshall (R-KS).
Fauci was asked by Marshall about Omicron’s federal government response at a contentious congressional hearing earlier in the week. He stated, “You’re so confused, it’s astonishment.”
Fauci, who has received death threats and harassment of his family, said to Rand that his “completely false” remarks and rhetoric “kindles the crazies out there.”
Personal attacks on Fauci are distracting from what should be the national focus -working together to stop a pandemic that kills approximately 500 000 people every year. The letter expressed gratitude for Dr. Fauci’s tireless efforts to help the nation over this epidemic and other crises.
“Throughout the COVID-19 epidemic, Dr. Fauci provided sage counsel to the American political leadership as well as the general public in these most difficult times. It states that his advice was as well-informed as data and the fast-changing circumstances allowed.
“Importantly,” Fauci said his advice with “humility” and being aware of what we know, and what is not, but it is a matter of judgement. He has always stressed the importance of vaccination, social distancing, and wearing masks. These are necessary and standard public health measures that all of us support,” the letter states.
“We appreciate Dr. Fauci for consistently stating the science in a manner that is true to the facts as they develop and without unwarranted speculation.”
“Sadly, in these times of political polarization where misinformation contaminates United States’ response, the United States’ response has become overly complicated, compromising our country’s effectiveness,” the letter states.
