German Coronavirus Infections Reach New Record, Tighter Measures Are Planned

(Reuters) The coronavirus prevalence in Germany has reached its highest level since the beginning of the pandemic, health figures revealed on Monday, as the three parties in talks to form the new government plan discussed an expansion of measures to fight the pandemic.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, Monday’s seven-day incidence rate (number of people per 100,000 infected during the last week) increased to 303, up from 289 on Monday.

The number of deaths climbed by 43, to the total of 97,715.

Robert Habeck, Greens coleader, stated that the three parties are currently in talks to form an alliance to strengthen the measures proposed to stop the spread of the new-wave infections.

“We are expanding the toolbox as compared to the suggestions made in the first reading,” Habeck told broadcaster ARD.

The measures include contact restrictions, an amendment that was seen by Reuters revealed.

On Saturday, three German state health ministers asked the parties that are negotiating to form an unofficial government to extend states’ authority to take stricter measures to combat pandemics, such as lockdowns or school closures.
